Alabama
Science in Motion (ASIM) is privileged to be an ongoing
partner with the Biology Department at The University of Alabama
in its grant from the Howard
Hughes Medical Institute. Although aimed primarily
at strengthening undergraduate education in biological sciences,
this grant is also significantly impacting the University’s
outreach efforts in K-12 education through Alabama Science in
Motion. For more information on the university partnerships of
the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, visit the HHMI
News Site. For more information on the partnership
between The University of Alabama Biology Department and the Howard
Hughes Medical Institute, visit the UA
Howard Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Science Improvement
Grant Site.
To
date, ASIM at The University of Alabama has concentrated on biology
and chemistry experiments, but the grant from the Howard Hughes
Medical Institute has enabled UA to develop and add a biophysics
element as well. The grant has funded development of biophysics
labs by professors from UA’s biology and physics departments;
in addition, the grant has provided both training and equipment
to high school science teachers so that they can use these labs
with their students.
